During the last few months some new editions were published:
Caraïbeditions, known for the Antillean Creole edition, now also took the job to publish [28] in the Creole language of Réunion, an island in the Indian Ocean, far away from the publishers home. However, well done! Saamer Publications in Teheran is the new publisher of two new Persian books by the long time known translator Fariborz Afroozi. He now published [14] and [28]. More are to come. |

2008, January 8
A completely new translation has hit the market: Cypriot Greek. Along with the marketing activities for the upcoming Asterix movie, album XII (Olympics) has been published in the end of 2007 by Greek publisher Mamouth Comix. This album was first announced to come out when the Olympics took place in Athens in 2004, but was postponed until now. Also translations of [12] in Cretan and Pontic Greek have been released now. |
2007, October 14There is a new publisher for Hebrew translations of the Asterix adventures. Around August an Israelian publishing house called Modan published a first book ([28]), which is the same as the Hebrew title which came out earlier this year, published by Albert-René for the French market. Also there are rumours about new contracts for Slovenia and Croatia. The publishing rights currently held by Egmont apparently will expire any time soon which is no big loss with only two titles published by Egmont in each country in the last decade. First titles by the new publishers are expected in early 2008. |
2006, December 30After more than a year, there is some decent news about new editions. Uderzo's own publishing company Albert-René announces books in Hebrew and Arabic ([28]) for March 2007 and a Latin translation of [33] in May. |

2005, September 16Now we see first announcements for the new title on the web: beside the Frenchmen also German, English, Dutch, Finnish and Spanish readers and our Polish neighbours will be able to enjoy #33 in their own language. And the Portuguese, too! |
2005, July 14
Along with the release of the new Asterix album in October, we can observe increasing activity around new translations. After the recently announced books in Helsinki slang and Hunsrücker Platt, now also the long promised Mirandese translation will come in autumn: Asterix l Goulês. It was first announced around 2001/2002, but then the project fell asleep. Now the new publisher ASA revived it. [updated 2005-09-13] |

Two new translations have been announced since the last update of this page: Publisher Egmont Ehapa from Germany announces a translation of [19] Le devin/Asterix and the soothsayer into Hunsrücker Platt, a German dialect spoken in the Hunsrück region, for March 2006. And even more recently we hear the announcement of a Helsinki Stadin slangi edition of [18] Les lauriers de César/Asterix and the laurel wreath (Kessen rehukotsa) published by Finnish publisher Egmont Kustannus. This one apparently will be available already this year in autumn and the translator will be Sami Garam who already translated a Donald Duck story. And don't forget: the new Asterix will be published October 14 in many European countries! So far we know about French (of course!), German, Dutch, ... [updated 2005-09-14] |
2005, February 2
After Meribérica/Liber apparently ceased publishing Asterix, Edições ASA is the new editor of the Portuguese edition. After Uderczo's solo titles are already available in the shops, now also the reprinting of the earlier titles starts. |

Ok, here we finally have some real news! Les Éditions Albert-René were hesitating for a long time - but now we find announcements for not less than six new translations of the latest book Astérix et la rentrée gauloise into different regional languages of France. The books are scheduled for October/September 2004. In the list of languages we find four languages that have already seen their own Asterix edition (all of them now out of print): Alsatian, a German dialect spoken in the northwest, Occitan (Langue d'Oc) spoken in the south of France, Corsican from the island of Corsica, and Breton, the celtic language of Brittany (Bretagne). New to Asterix are Gallo, the romance language of Brittany, and Picard spoken in the northeast and also in Belgium. The short stories of the latter translation are actually alternatingly translated into Picard ('picard du nord') and Ch'ti ('picard du sud') according to Carine Lebreton at PicardieWeb. 2004, January 8After half a decade without (almost) any Asterix in the bookstores of the English-speaking world, we finally got the official confirmation for a new Asterix edition in English, published by Orion (Hachette Group), starting April 15, 2004. [updated 2004-01-21] |
2003, NovemberIn August in France a new Asterix album has entered the stage: Astérix et la rentrée gauloise. It's not a complete story like the regular 31 books, but it's a collection of short-stories that have been created by Goscinny and Uderzo throughout 40 years, including one new work which has never been published before and spiced up with some background information about each story. A new dialect translation is published in the German Mundart-series: Unterfränkisch. Meefränggisch (as it is called to by the locals) is spoken in the area around the city of Würzburg.

2002, December 22Yet another Farsi bootleg edition has popped up! Based on the English translation (same character names, etc.) at least Iranian versions of [26] Asterix and the Black Gold and [27] Asterix and Son have been published as hardcover books by Lak Lak.

2002, October 17Some news from the Frankfurt book fair which took place in Frankfurt, Germany, last weekend: Egmont Hungary ceased publishing Asterix. So currently there is no Hungarian edition available. According to both the publishers Egmont (who hold the right for the English edition of Asterix [1-24]) and Orion (who already publish [25-31] and would love to publish the others as well) there won't be any new English edition / reprint of the first 24 adventures until at least end of next year. Egmont states the problem is Hodder-Dargaud (the previous publisher) who don't sell the translation by Bell and Hockridge to Egmont. Even an edition with a new translation seems to be impossible as Hodder claims it would automatically imply copying of parts of the old texts. No good news... sorry. |
2002, September 22Some new translations have been discovered recently: The most exciting one is a new Persian edition from Iran. After two books published in the 70s just before the revolution, now there is a new bootleg edition from Teheran as pointed out by the translator. By now two titles are said to be published.
Furthermore an Italian collector discovered a very old Italian translation of Asterix chez les Breton. It's a booklet in the Linus series, published by Editrice Figure s.a.s Milano in April 1967. It contains the full story plus Snoopy, Popeye and others. The title is Asterix in Britannia and thus differs from the later editions. Question: Are there more titles published in this serious? More info wanted.
The last news from Italy is about a translation of Asterix legionnaire into the German dialect Südtirolerisch, spoken in the north of Italy in the German speaking Südtirol region. The book is published by the German publisher Egmont Ehapa Verlag, Berlin, as part of their Mundart (dialect) series. They also publish a second book in the Berlin dialect, but with a different team of translators now.
We all know the Latin editions by Egmont Ehapa Verlag, Berlin, translated by by Karl-Heinz Graf "Rubricastellanus" v. Rothenburg. Recently a collector from the Netherlands discovered a previously unknown Latin translation of La serpe d'or from 1968. Asterix et aurea falx, translated and published by J. Molina, Murcia, Spain, is a black and white booklet. More information is very much appreciated. Can you help?

2002, May 23After Didakta apparently lost the rights, in 2000 a new publisher in Slovenia, Založba Egmont, has published two albums: [13] Asterix in kotliček and [18] Cezarjev lovorov venec. In the meantime the publishing house has been closed again.

2002, May 9Hachette and Les Éditions Albert René have announced a Dutch/Flemish dialect edition for the end of 2003. Probably 6 different dialect translations will be published. |
2002, March 17The South Tirolian dialect translation in the Mundart series by Ehapa Verlag, Berlin, Germany - originally announced for May 2002 - is postponed to September. The first 10 Dutch albums will be retranslated by Frits v.d. Heide. The new edition is being published from April 2002. |

2001, December 20Right for Christmas Egmont Kustannus, Finland has published the third finnish dialect book. The title of the book in the Rauma dialect is Asteriksim boikkane mukul [27] By the way: Merry Christmas to all of you!

2001, November 27Again a new dialect has been added to Egmont Ehapa Verlag's "Mundart" series. This time it's the German dialect spoken in Mainz: Mainzerisch. The title of the book is "Kuddelmuddel ums Kupperdibbe" [13].

2001, September 22Back from my holidays and a bit late, I'm happy to announce a new Korean translation by the publisher Moonhak-kwa-Jisung-Sa. The first three adventures (available since August 10th) are Asterix the Gaul, Asterix and Cleopatra and Asterix the Gladiator. The second news is about a book translated into one more German dialect, Münchnerisch, in Egmont Ehapa Verlag's Mundart series. It was published this month.

2001, June 7Mamouthcomix, Athens, has published the first Asterix in Kritiki (Cretan), a Greek dialect spoken on the island of Crete.

Today Albert Uderzo held a press conference in Brussels, officially presenting the new Asterix! It will be in the bookshops from October 14 in 27 countries (according to the publishers) and translated into 16 different languages. The initial number of prints will be 8,000,000 worldwide!
